Bedum, The Netherlands
On the edge of the rural landscape and the town of Bedum a commercial zone is created. A new bridge over the Boterdiep provides access to the area and serves as a beacon for the southern entrance of the town.
The abrupt transmission from rural to urban is accentuated by the asymmetrical design of the bridge.
The lifting mechanism consists of a single column in striking design on one side of the bridge. The forked balance embraces the columns head and stretches out diagonally over the deck with its left arm. When opened the bridges appears to welcome the visitor with open arms.
